Root Canal

The words ‘root canal’ can make almost anyone cringe.  Most people think only of the painful procedures their parents had.  Fortunately, today’s root canals are no longer the uncomfortable, difficult procedures they were in the past.

Today’s root canals can be as easy, and efficient as having a filling put it.  When done by a highly trained dental professional, like those at Delray Beach Family Dentistry, root canals can be simple, and have a very high success rate.

Root canals are necessary when a tooth becomes badly decayed or becomes infected.  The inside of the tooth contains a small chamber that holds the soft pulp and nerve. If either of these are damaged, it will begin to break down, and bacteria will form.  The bacteria can cause an infection, or in more severe cases an abscess.

To repair the damaged tooth, the skilled dentists, or endontist at Delray Beach Family Dentistry will remove the nerve and pulp, clean and fill the chamber, then seal the tooth.  If not taken care of right away, the infected tooth may have to be extracted.  Getting immediate care can help save the tooth.

While some root canals can be done in a single visit, more severe infections may require a two-visit treatment.  At Delray Beach Family Dentistry, we will discuss which treatment you will need beforehand to make sure you know what to expect, and are comfortable with the procedure.

Some signs that a root canal may be needed include extreme pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat, or cold, swelling of the gums, or blackening of the tooth.  Don’t suffer with tooth pain, when Delray Beach Family Dentistry can make you comfortable, and pain free.
